Do you exude confidence?
I didn’t. I was never my own cheerleader. I couldn’t accept a compliment and I couldn’t look anyone in the eye. I was petrified. I lived in fear of walking out the door and someone smiling at me.
Then, one day, I stopped. I gave in and I opened up. I decided that I didn’t want to live my life in fear anymore.
I opened the door and I stepped out. I forced myself to look up, and brave a brand new world. Don’t get me wrong, I was scared, still, but I was living. You know what I realized? I realized that people actually liked me for who I was. I realized that people thought I was funny, and compassionate, and a good friend. I realized that I was funny, and compassionate, and a good friend. I realized that life offers much more to the person who is open, than to the person who is shut down. And, it’s not the world, it’s us. It was me. There were opportunities all around me, but because I couldn’t lift my head up, I couldn’t see them. I don’t waste one single second on looking down at the ground under my feet anymore because I’m too busy seeing where I choose to soar.
It took training, and it took time. If you were ever that person, give me a nod. Yes, thank you! High five that right back to you. If you are that person…. Get really close to this monitor right now. Listen close. I adore you. We adore you. We are out here, waiting for you to come out. Now, nod with me…. That’s the first step. Even if you’re not so sure you believe me, it doesn’t really matter. You’re listening and we’re in training here… remember? So, pretend I’m right here in front of you and raise your head up confident one… and nod. Now, ready? Go to the grocery store, and while you’re there, I’m not asking that you say a word. Just raise your head and make eye contact. And, smile. If only briefly. Just smile. That’s all it takes. Imagine you just saw your best friend… watch their reaction. Isn’t it beautiful? See their face relax as they see you smile. You’ve changed their day with just your smile. That’s it. I’m not asking for more. Just smile today.
Like right now? I’m smiling at you. Are you smiling back?
