Self-Critique and Creating Opportunities

Have you ever replayed a moment over and over in your head and thought “if I had only said it this way” or “if only I had done this instead” and wonder how things would have turned out? If you said yes (which I’m guessing most of you did), then great! You are halfway to turning your everyday experiences into opportunities.

Opportunities are all around us. And most of the time we don’t even realize a missed opportunity until it’s too late. I want you to take a really hard look at your day and think of something you could’ve done just a little differently to create a better outcome. Would that outcome have an effect on the overall success of your day?

One of the must-haves for success in creating opportunities for yourself is the desire to constantly improve. If you are the type of person that is content with whatever outcome you achieve, then it is pretty safe to say you will not be creating many opportunities for yourself. It takes a self-aware and self-critical person to be able to look at a situation, and admit that they are not happy with the outcome. Then ask themselves what they could have done differently to get a better outcome.

With that in mind, it will also take time. It’s a game of trial and error and it’s an ever-changing process. You should constantly be replaying your disappointing outcomes in your head and re-working the conversations. You should run the new scenarios in your head so many times that the next time a similar situation arises you won’t even have to think about it. The new response or action to get the desired response just comes out!

It’s difficult to stay positive if you constantly self-critique. Don’t be knocked down by missed opportunities. Don’t dwell on the negative. Figure out an alternative option and the next time the opportunity arises seize it and don’t look back! Keep fighting for every opportunity you get and eventually, the positive outcomes will come too.
